Paul Ince, former Manchester United midfielder, has revealed why Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez decided to move to Old Trafford instead of Manchester City.
Ince said Sanchez opted for Manchester United because the Red Devils are “miles bigger” than their rivals on the other side of the city.
He said Manchester City merely could not compete with the history of its rivals.
Speaking with Paddy Power, Ince said, “Everyone is excited about City, but when it comes to the two clubs, Man United is miles bigger than City, and players would still prefer to go over Pep, that’s a fact. They will not go to the city because they think they are a huge and historic club than United because they just are not.
“Some might get the satisfaction of winning the league this year, but those years of history, and the side that [José] Mourinho is building, the players want to be a part of that.
“This signature just confirms that, Sanchez had the opportunity to enter a team where he could have won a trophy, but he did not, he chose to go to United for everything they represent, and that says a lot about the size of the club.
“The city has some incredible players, but winning the league this year means nothing, they need to do it year after year and collect trophies to compete with United, that’s the real test, they’re not serial winners, they are, and that’s why the Players want to be there.
“With the Champions League just around the corner, this is a big boost, Sanchez has not come to Old Trafford not to play, he has come to show how good he is, on the top stage, which is Europe. Special player and the guy who does not appear as often, and I would say that United’s hopes of winning their 4th European trophy are much more likely.
“We all assumed that Sanchez would join Man City.” There was all this talk about how desperate he was to meet with Pep Guardiola from his days in Barcelona.
“Suddenly, Man United is the destination for him, and that’s a vast statement from the club, he’s one of the best players in the Premier League, and he’s had a lot of competition to sign him.
“This is his way of saying: ‘Do not belittle us, we are still the biggest club in the league and we can get what we want.’
“It seems that United, City, Liverpool, and Chelsea were after him, Sanchez, choosing United, sends a great message to those clubs, especially Man City.”
Sanchez is expected to complete his move to Manchester United today after agreeing to a salary of £ 450,000.
